I have missed him so much. I can not articulate how much happiness he has brought to my life. I would tape his Saturday morning show- Pee Wee's Playhouse (remember VHS?) every week & his 2 movies had repeat viewings with my family. His absurd arrest for child porno, based on kitchy work from decades past (plus Rob Lowe's sex tape) were eventually be dismissed, but he career never recovered. Don't you think it is time for some more Pee Wee? He is needed more than ever.
Today is the birthday of his creator- the amazingly talented Paul Reubens.

When I actually got to visit the Alamo in the late 80's, I had no choice but to ask the guide to see the basement. The rather dour fellow said to me "Yeah, I've never heard THAT before." It was still totally worth it.
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I have been huge Paul Reubens fans ever since his first HBO special. So many great lines from "Big Adventure," but my altime favorite has to be: "Everyone's got such big buts." Thanks for the late night giggle!
Love Pee Wee! Did you know there's talk of producing a remake of Pee Wee's Playhouse as a stage show? http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2009/08/paul-reubens-revives-peewee-herman-for-new-stage-show.html
ReplyDeleteHuge Pee Wee fan here!
ReplyDeleteAs i read this, I turned to look at my tlking Pee Wee herman doll on the bookshelf behind me, and I think he may have winked at me.
Happy Birthday PW aka PR!
I'm so glad that someone like yourself who knows acting, culture, and music also loves Pee Wee/Paul Reubens!! In addition to his brilliance his "Playhouse" and his two films, Paul Reubens was also wonderful in several "Murphy Brown" episodes where he played her secretary.
ReplyDeleteHe was also creepy/fabulous in a cameo role on "30 Rock," playing the sickly Prince Gerhardt, the last living Hapsburg.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, my word verification for this comment was "jocklit."
I have tix for the Pee Wee comeback show for the day after Thxgiving.
ReplyDeleteOh man, you've opened a can of worms here. When I was in my very early teens, my friends and I would always be doing Pee Wee's dance from this scene. Someone would always start doing it at really inappropriate moments just to get a laugh. It still cracks me up to this day. Pee Wee's Big Adventure was a defining movie of my childhood, along with The Goonies. Nice post.
